'He was supposed to return tomorrow' - Atalanta coach praises Lookman for his commitment

Former African Footballer of the Year, Ademola Lookman, is in contention to make his first appearance for Atalanta in 2026 after returning early from international duty with the Super Eagles.

The forward is expected to be included in the matchday squad for Atalanta's UEFA Champions League clash against Spanish side Athletic Bilbao, having been spotted training with his teammates on Tuesday, on the eve of the encounter.

Lookman enjoyed an outstanding campaign at the tournament in Morocco, recording seven goal involvements (three goals and four assists), the highest tally by any player at Afcon 2025.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference, Atalanta coach Raffaele Palladino praised Lookman's decision to return ahead of schedule, describing it as a clear demonstration of professionalism.

Providing an update on Lookman, he said: "He's fine, he came back today, I'm happy to have him back. He was supposed to return tomorrow, but he wanted to return a day early, and the club provided him with transport to bring him home. I'm happy because he showed commitment, he finished his training, and he'll be available."

Lookman has directly participated in two goals in five Champions League outings this season.

The Nerazzurri are currently in the top eight of the League Phase and will target victory against Athletic Bilbao to avoid the playoffs.
