'He's working hard' - Porto coach says Terem Moffi is close to earning a starting role

Porto coach Francesco Farioli has confirmed that Nigerian striker Terem Moffi is edging closer to a starting role ahead of the clash against Rio Ave FC on Sunday.

Moffi, who joined FC Porto on loan from OGC Nice, made his debut last weekend against C.D. Nacional following the season-ending injury to Samu Aghehowa.

The Nigeria international came on for the final sixteen minutes as Porto battled to secure the win and preserve their position at the top of the league table.

Speaking during his press conference on Saturday, Farioli revealed that Moffi has returned to his optimal physical condition and is working hard to regain full match sharpness.

"These past few weeks have been good for improvement; he's working hard. I've already said that in terms of weight and body composition, he's back to where he should be. He's close," he said as reported by Ojogo.

While noting that fellow forward Deniz Gul is currently ahead in the pecking order, the Italian coach said the Nigerian is “close” and could be ready to start soon.

"When could he be a starter? Soon. We have Deniz at the moment, who is a step ahead. In the coming weeks, we'll need both of them to help us maintain a very high level," Farioli added.

"I thank the club for preparing us in January for the worst-case scenario, which unfortunately happened. We're in a situation that isn't ideal, but we have two very good forwards. They will both play a key role."

Before completing his move to FC Porto, Terem Moffi’s last competitive appearance came in OGC Nice’s 3–1 defeat to FC Lorient on November 30.

Following that match, the Super Eagles striker and his teammate Jeremy Boga did not feature again due to a confrontation with club supporters.

Now at Porto, Moffi will be aiming to secure regular playing time, rediscover his best form, and deliver strong performances as he looks to finish the season on a positive note and strengthen his position ahead of the summer.
