History-making forward and two other Mambas players the Super Eagles must stop to secure victory

As the Super Eagles of Nigeria step out for today’s Africa Cup of Nations 2025 Round of 16 encounter against Mozambique, focus will be firmly on navigating a disciplined and increasingly confident Mambas side.

For Nigeria, containing Mozambique’s key players will be essential to controlling the tempo and avoiding an upset. Here are three Mambas the Super Eagles must keep under close watch.

Geny Catamo — The Primary Attacking Outlet

The Sporting CP winger made history in the Mambas’ final Group F match by scoring against the Indomitable Lions, becoming the first Mozambican player to net goals in back-to-back AFCON games.

His performances have drawn attention as one of the team’s most productive players in the final third. His ability to drive at defenders and cut inside from wide areas has been central to Mozambique’s attacking threat, making defensive discipline on the flanks a priority for Nigeria.

Reinildo Mandava — Defensive Anchor and Leader

Reinildo Mandava provides experience and authority at the back. Comfortable across the defensive line, he reads the game well and organises those around him. Beyond his defensive duties, Reinildo offers calmness in possession and leadership in high-pressure moments, attributes that have helped Mozambique remain competitive against stronger sides.

Guima — Midfield Conductor

Guima has been central to Mozambique’s midfield structure. His work rate, ball retention and positional awareness allow the Mambas to transition smoothly between defence and attack. By limiting his time on the ball, Nigeria can disrupt Mozambique’s rhythm and assert control in central areas.

As the Super Eagles target a place in the quarter-finals, these three Mozambique players represent individuals who have played documented roles in their team’s AFCON 2025 journey so far.
