Former West Ham United goalkeeper Robert Green was scathing in his assessment of Calvin Bassey after the defender squandered a gilt-edged opportunity late in the first half of Fulham's 2–1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur in a London derby staged at Craven Cottage on Sunday afternoon.
With the Cottagers 2-0 up courtesy of Harry Wilson and Alex Iwobi's goals, the Nigeria international centre-back missed a glorious chance to put the game to bed.
Completely unmarked and standing on the edge of the six-yard box, Bassey fired wastefully over the crossbar after Tottenham Hotspur failed to clear a corner.
Bassey has forced his way into Fulham's starting lineup in recent weeks, having been left out of the first three matches following his return from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Green, who was on punditry duty for Sky Sports at Craven Cottage, was emphatic in his criticism of Bassey after the defender's miss, with halftime approaching.
He said: "That is a glorious chance and a horrible miss from Bassey - what a chance to put the game away on the strike of half-time, but not a clean contact at all".
Bassey's miss almost proved costly as Tottenham Hotspur pulled a goal back in the 66th minute when Richarlison was left unmarked at the back post and he nodded the ball into the net.
Bassey picked up a yellow card after the Brazilian striker’s goal for holding onto the ball and delaying the restart.
