Hull City manager Sergej Jakirović has wished Super Eagles defender Semi Ajayi the very best ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, describing the centre-back’s call-up as a source of pride for the club despite the challenge his absence poses.
Ajayi, who was selected to represent Nigeria at the biennial tournament, will miss Hull City’s Championship clash against his former club, West Bromwich Albion, on Saturday.
Speaking to Hull Live, Jakirović admitted the Nigerian international’s absence would be a significant setback for the Tigers, particularly given the timing of the competition during the domestic season.
"It's a big headache for us, yes, and all the clubs that have players from Africa, but what can we do? This is the Africa Cup of Nations,” he said as quoted by Express & Star.
"For those players, this is like the European Championship. They represent their own country, and they are very proud. We are very proud because we have a national team player and we wish him all the very best."
Jakirović, however, expressed confidence in Hull City’s defensive depth, noting that Ajayi’s absence would also provide opportunities for other players to step up.
He listed Charlie Hughes, John Egan, Akin Famewo, who is a Nigerian centre-back, and Cathal McCarthy as options capable of filling the void during the tournament period.
"We have Charlie Hughes, John Egan and Akin Famewo. We have Cathal McCarthy there, so there will be a lot of chances for them as well," he added.
Ajayi recently featured in Nigeria’s preparations for the AFCON, playing the second half of the Super Eagles’ friendly against Egypt at the Cairo International Stadium on Tuesday night.
The 32-year-old defender is expected to play a key role in the tournament, particularly following the international retirement of former captain William Troost-Ekong and the injury setback suffered by Benjamin Frederick.
Nigeria will kick off their AFCON campaign in Group C against Tanzania on December 23, before facing Tunisia on December 27 and concluding the group stage against Uganda on December 30.
Head coach Éric Chelle will be targeting a fourth continental title for the Super Eagles as they seek to restore confidence and national pride after the disappointment of failing to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.
