Club Brugge midfielder Raphael Onyedika has showered praise on Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi ahead of Nigeria’s final Group C encounter against Uganda on Tuesday.
Speaking to journalists, the 24-year-old described Ndidi as an exemplary leader who has had a positive influence on the squad both on and off the pitch.
“He is a fantastic captain and he has been leading the group on and off the pitch in a good way and he is helping everyone. He is a good captain,” Onyedika said.
Despite featuring in Nigeria’s preparatory friendly against Egypt in Cairo, Onyedika is yet to make an appearance since the start of the tournament.
Addressing growing calls from fans for him to be given playing time, the midfielder insisted he remains focused on his responsibilities rather than external opinions.
“I don't think about that - it is about do - my training and see what happens from there,” he said.
Reacting to media discussions surrounding his situation, Onyedika added: “No, I have not seen it. I don't go so much in the media. You know, it's like just be ready for whenever the coach needs you.”
Nigeria have already secured qualification for the Round of 16, but Onyedika revealed that the team remains fully focused on ending the group stage on a winning note against Uganda.
“I think we will approach it like the first two games and the vibe has been good and the group is in good energy and good vibe,” he added.
“We never think about that, the most important thing is the game and we will see what happens in the Round of 16.”
The Super Eagles will be eager to avoid defeat as they look to secure top spot in Group C.
