'I feel supported' - Werder Bremen chief plays down exit talk after controversial Victor Boniface deal

Werder Bremen managing director Clemens Fritz has played down concerns over his future at the club, insisting he retains the backing of the supervisory board despite mounting criticism over the signing of Victor Boniface.

Fritz has come under scrutiny following Bremen’s decision to bring the Nigerian international to the Weserstadion on loan after a turbulent summer for the striker.

Boniface had seen a proposed transfer to AC Milan collapse after failing a medical examination, even though an agreement had reportedly been reached with Bayer Leverkusen.

In a bid to help the 25-year-old rediscover his best form, Werder Bremen secured his services on loan until the end of the season.

However, the move failed to deliver the desired impact. Boniface struggled for consistency, registering just two assists in 11 Bundesliga appearances before suffering a knee injury that is expected to rule him out for the remainder of the campaign.

The injury, coupled with Boniface’s fitness history, intensified criticism of Fritz’s recruitment strategy, prompting a meeting with the club’s supervisory board to review recent decisions, including the Boniface transfer.

Speaking after the meeting, Fritz expressed confidence in his position and revealed that the board had shown understanding of the circumstances surrounding the deal.

"I feel supported. I explained the situation to the supervisory board openly and transparently and was met with understanding," he told Bild as quoted by Fussballtransfers.

Boniface will now turn his attention to recovering from the injury as he hopes to rediscover his best form next season.
