Super Eagles left-back Bruno Onyemaechi has opened up on his frustration during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, revealing that former Nigeria head coach José Peseiro denied him the opportunity to feature at the tournament.
Onyemaechi was part of Nigeria’s squad to the 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast, where the Super Eagles finished as runners-up, but he failed to play a single minute throughout the competition.
However, the Olympiacos defender has enjoyed a turnaround at the ongoing AFCON in Morocco, featuring in back-to-back matches against Tunisia and Uganda.
The appearances mark a personal milestone for Onyemaechi, as it is the first time he has played in two consecutive AFCON matches since making his tournament debut.
Reflecting on his journey, the 26-year-old admitted that the disappointment of being overlooked in 2023 has helped shape his current mindset.
“You know when a coach gives you the opportunity you need to take it. I remember the last AFCON,” Onyeamachi told reporters in Morocco.
“I was begging for the opportunity but Peseiro didn't give. So right now, I have learned from experience to be ready whenever they call you.”
“So that's the most important thing and I give God all the glory for this moment.”
Onyemaechi’s recent performances have put him in contention to retain his place in the starting lineup when Nigeria face Mozambique in the Round of 16 on Monday.
His rise has been boosted by Zaidu Sanusi’s underwhelming display in the opening match against Tanzania, creating an opening at left-back which Onyemaechi has taken convincingly.
The defender will be hoping to continue his fine form as the Super Eagles push for progression to the quarterfinals and keep their hopes of securing a fourth AFCON title alive.
