Besiktas midfielder Wilfred Ndidi has addressed Victor Osimhen’s reaction after the striker appeared visibly upset when he was substituted in Nigeria’s 2–1 victory over Tanzania on Tuesday night..
Osimhen, who was replaced by Paul Onuachu late in the game, showed signs of frustration as he walked off the pitch and exchanged words with head coach Eric Chelle before taking his seat on the bench.
Speaking after the match, Ndidi said he did not witness the moment but understands the emotions behind Osimhen’s reaction.
“I didn't see that but it is what it is, he is a big player, he wants to do the best for the team, maybe a bit frustrated,” he said.
Ndidi described Osimhen as a passionate, driven footballer whose competitive spirit sometimes manifests in visible frustration.
“It's normal, we are human beings, maybe he feels like the game didn't go his way because he was trying for the team, that's the kind of player he is, we needed him,” he added.
Ndidi added that Osimhen may simply have placed too much pressure on himself, stressing that he plans to speak with the striker.
“So, I think he is kind of putting too much pressure on himself. I am going to speak to him, he is a great guy, he wants to win, everyone wants to win.”
The Super Eagles expressed delight with the victory, describing it as a morale booster and a ‘Christmas gift.’
“I feel very great, I feel proud of the team, the most important thing is getting the three points. It is a Christmas gift and I am really proud of the team,” he said.
When asked about the team’s defensive performance, Ndidi emphasized that defending is not the sole responsibility of the backline.
“In football it is not just the defenders that do the job, it is about the team. So when you talk about the defense, I saw it is about the team.”
The former Leicester City star revealed the advice he gave the players before the commencement of the match.
“What I said is for the guys to have fun, this is football. As much as we want to win, don't forget to enjoy the game.”
Ndidi also acknowledged the support he received from former Super Eagles skipper William Troost-Ekong as he adjusted to the leadership role.
“Yes, when you're getting something from Troost-Ekong. It was the first time for me and I felt under pressure and he just tried to calm me down. Amazing guy,” he noted.
With the win, Nigeria sit second in Group C, level on points with Tunisia but behind on goal difference after the Carthage Eagles’ emphatic victory over Uganda.
The Super Eagles will face Tunisia next, knowing that a win will secure their place in the knockout stages.
