Super Eagles defender Igoh Ogbu has reacted to Nigeria’s victory over Egypt in the third-place playoff of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, a result that earned the team the bronze medal on Saturday.
The Slavia Prague player featured as Nigeria concluded the tournament unbeaten in regulation and extra time, recording five wins and two draws from seven matches.
Speaking to reporters in the mixed zone after the game, Ogbu shared his thoughts on the team’s performance and the overall experience of the competition.
Asked to reflect on the achievement after securing the bronze medal, the defender expressed strong admiration for the squad and the atmosphere within the team.
“I think the team is amazing. I love this team. I think this is one of the best gatherings we've ever had in the national team,” Ogbu said.
Despite being new to the Super Eagles setup, the defender made it clear that he felt a strong sense of pride in being part of the group during the tournament.
“I know I’m new here but for me I’m really proud of this team,” he added.
The bronze medal was a significant milestone for Ogbu, as it came during his debut Africa Cup of Nations campaign with Nigeria.
He was also asked about winning a medal in his first major international competition.
Reflecting on whether he anticipated such an outcome, Ogbu pointed to the role of family support throughout his journey to the national team.
“Yes. I’ve seen it. And family has always supported me to be in this position. So, I’m really happy and proud,” he said.
The former Lillestrom defender made his Afcon debut earlier in the tournament during Nigeria’s group stage match against Uganda.
When asked how he planned to celebrate the bronze medal victory with his teammates, Ogbu kept his response simple. “I just go relax happy and just eat and be happy,” he said.
Nigeria’s win over Egypt ensured the Super Eagles finished the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations on the podium, with Ogbu ending his first tournament with the national team as a medal winner.
