Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman has reflected on Nigeria’s disappointing penalty shootout defeat to 2025 Africa Cup of Nations hosts Morocco in the semi-finals.
The Atalanta attacker admitted the encounter had taken a heavy toll both mentally and physically on the team.
“It was a tough game. We played 120 minutes. Difficult game, but obviously to lose on penalties is even more difficult,” Lookman said, acknowledging the challenge his side faced in Rabat.
The former Everton player also highlighted the quality of the Moroccan side as a decisive factor in the match’s outcome.
“I think a strong team. At the end of the day went to penalties,” he added, reflecting on how evenly matched the contest had been before it came down to spot-kicks.
Despite the heartbreak, Lookman was hesitant to look ahead to the Super Eagles’ upcoming fixture, the third-place playoff against Egypt.
“To be honest, not really thinking about, not really thought about that to be honest. Obviously because of the disappointment of tonight,” he stated, emphasizing the emotional impact of the semi-final exit.
Three-time Africa Cup of Nations champions Nigeria will now aim to end the tournament on a positive note when they face the Pharaohs of Egypt on Saturday.
The encounter will provide an opportunity for redemption and a chance to secure a podium finish after the narrow loss to Morocco.
