Semi Ajayi has reflected on Nigeria's 2-0 victory over Algeria on Saturday, a result that secured the Super Eagles a place in the semi-final stage of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
'It will be hostile' - Ajayi
The Hull City defender was part of a disciplined Nigerian side that delivered a composed performance to overcome a highly rated Algerian team and extend their flawless campaign at the tournament.
When asked whether Nigeria could outplay Morocco in the same manner they handled Algeria, Ajayi acknowledged the quality of the opposition while stressing the level required from the Super Eagles.
He said, “Algeria is a top team. It wasn't easy, but we won our A game today and we're definitely going to need to be again in the next round.”
Ajayi was also questioned on what differentiates the current Super Eagles squad from the team that featured at the previous Africa Cup of Nations.
The defender pointed to a shared motivation between both teams and the desire to correct past disappointment.
He stated, “Both teams are driven. We both came with one goal and the goal is the same. We know how painful it was to not go all the way last time and we're looking to make amends for that.”
Despite progressing to the semi-finals, Ajayi emphasised that the task ahead remains significant, adding, “But like I said, we still got a semi-final to deal with and we'll be really hungry and ready and focused to make sure we complete that mission.”
Nigeria are set to face host nation Morocco in the semi-final, and Ajayi addressed the challenge of playing in a hostile environment.
Reflecting on the atmosphere against Algeria he explained, “Yeah, it will be hostile, but I think we got enough experience in the group to be able to deal with that. Today was pretty much an away game. I'd say the stadium was about 80% Algeria.”
He added that managing such conditions would be beneficial going forward, saying, “So, learning how to deal with that and navigate that will stand us in goodstead for the next game.”
Looking ahead to areas for improvement, the defender maintained that the team remains focused on refining their performance.
He said, “We can we can always improve like no performance is perfect. There's little details that we can iron out and fix and we'll be looking to do that on the training field before the next game.”
The Super Eagles of Nigeria will seek to maintain their perfect run at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations when they face hosts Morocco on Wednesday, January 14, with a place in the final at stake.
