1996 Olympics gold medalist Emmanuel Babayaro has offered a strong defence of Alex Iwobi following the midfielder's impressive display during Nigeria's Africa Cup of Nations. opener against Tanzania.
The Fulham star has come under severe criticism, with sections of the fanbase and some pundits openly questioning his commitment, work rate and overall influence on the pitch.
However, Iwobi silenced his critics in the win over the Taifa Stars by providing two assists, making him the first Nigerian to do so at the Africa Cup of Nations since Obi Mikel in 2013.
The Hale End Academy graduate and has now created 18 chances at the Afcon and completed a game-high 71 passes against Tanzania.
Babayaro singled out Iwobi as the standout performer in the win over Tanzania, though he acknowledged the contribution of Semi Ajayi.
"I have heard so many nasty things about this particular young man, talking about Iwobi. I was fascinated," Emmanuel Babayaro said on the ATHLST podcast.
“In my book, in my opinion, he was my Man of the Match. I think Semi Ajayi was also worth it, but it was just that goal that gave that to him."
Babayaro emphasised Iwobi's importance to the Super Eagles, and suggested the midfielder has been unfairly judged by fans.
"Iwobi was the engine in that particular team, so I think that man has not been dealt with fairly in my opinion. Watching him against Tanzania, I saw something else."
Iwobi is set to earn his 93rd cap for the Super Eagles on Saturday night when the Super Eagles take on Tunisia in their second group game of the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations.
