Liverpool legend praises Mateta's strength in physical duel with Fulham centre-back Bassey

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has praised Jean-Philippe Mateta after the French striker outmuscled Calvin Bassey during Crystal Palace's 2–1 win over Fulham on Sunday.

Bassey, who had been locked in a physical battle with Mateta before the French striker's withdrawal, couldn't prevent him from getting a shot on target early in the second half.

The France international displayed great strength to latch onto a pass from Jeremy Pino but couldn't direct his effort into the net past the onrushing Bernd Leno.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Carragher commended Bassey's defensive strength but noted that Mateta is one of the few strikers capable of getting the better of the Nigerian in a physical duel.

"Bassey usually knocks players over in that situation," he said.

"Mateta just gets his shot off. He is one of the few players that can compete with Bassey physically."

Bassey, who played the full 90 minutes, delivered a solid defensive performance despite Fulham conceding two goals at Craven Cottage.

The 25-year-old won four aerial duels, made five clearances, recorded five recoveries, and was not dribbled past throughout the entire match.

Despite his strong display, he will be disappointed with the result as the Cottagers continue their search for a first home win over Crystal Palace since 2005.
