Meanest defence at Afcon 2025: Maza lifts lid on Algeria's solid backline before Nigeria clash

Algerian midfielder Ibrahim Maza has highlighted the key behind the team's strong defence ahead of the crucial quarterfinal matchup against Nigeria.

Algeria share the best defensive record at AFCON 2025 with Morocco, having conceded just one goal in four matches since the tournament kicked off in December.

The Desert Warriors conceded their only goal in a 3–1 victory over Equatorial Guinea in their final Group E fixture, sealing progression to the knockout stage with a 100 per cent record.

Speaking to reporters, the Bayer Leverkusen midfielder credited the team's setup, talent, and mentality as the reasons for their resilient defense at the tournament.

"I think it is just very good tactics," he said. "Very good players in the back line and we stay very compact in the past games."

Despite their strong defensive performance, the North African team faces a tough challenge when they face the Super Eagles at Marakesh Stadium on Saturday.

Nigeria has also had an impressive run in Morocco, netting twelve goals in four matches at the biennial tournament.

Ahead of this important match, Nigeria hopes its attacking strength will break through the Algerians' defense and lead the Super Eagles to victory to ensure they progress to the semifinals.
