The global football community has been united in grief following the tragic passing of Sunday Ndidi, father of Nigeria international and Beşiktaş midfielder Wilfred Ndidi.
Beşiktaş confirmed the heartbreaking news in an official statement, revealing that Sunday Ndidi died in a fatal traffic accident.
The Turkish giants described the loss as deeply painful and extended their sympathies to the player and his loved ones.
"We are deeply saddened to learn of the tragic passing of our footballer Wilfred Ndidi’s esteemed father, Sunday Ndidi, in a fatal traffic accident,” the club stated.
"May Allah grant mercy to the deceased; we extend our condolences to our footballer Wilfred Ndidi, his family, and loved ones."
The Nigeria Football Federation was among the first to express its condolences, offering words of comfort to the Super Eagles star and his family.
In a message shared on social media, the federation wrote: “Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this difficult time, Wilfred.”
The Turkish Football Federation also joined in mourning, acknowledging the profound loss suffered by the Nigerian midfielder.
In a statement published on its website, the federation said it had learned of the news with deep sorrow and offered solidarity to both the player and his club.
"We share Ndidi’s grief and extend our condolences to him, his grieving family, and the entire Beşiktaş community,” the statement read.
Following the international retirement of William Troost-Ekong, Ndidi was named captain of the Super Eagles and went on to lead Nigeria to a third-place finish at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
The Nath Boys product joined Beşiktaş last summer and has made 16 appearances in all competitions.
