Head Coach Eric Chelle has named a 28-man Super Eagles squad for the 35th Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2025) in Morocco.
The squad blends experience, versatility, and youthful energy across the backline, aiming to provide a strong foundation for Nigeria’s campaign.
The defensive roster includes a mix of seasoned internationals and emerging talents.
Former Arsenal defender Ryan Alebiosu, now at Blackburn Rovers, brings tactical flexibility, while Calvin Bassey (Fulham FC) offers physicality, pace, and aerial prowess.
Igoh Ogbu (Slavia Prague) adds European exposure and youthful dynamism, complementing the experienced core.
Semi Ajayi (Hull City) and Chidozie Awaziem (Nantes FC) provide reliability and leadership in central defense, with Ajayi known for his physical presence and Awaziem for his tactical awareness.
Full-back options are strengthened by Zaidu Sanusi (FC Porto) and Bright Osayi-Samuel (Birmingham City), offering speed, crossing ability, and defensive coverage on the flanks.
Bruno Onyemaechi (Olympiakos) rounds out the defensive line, giving Chelle further depth and versatility.
Goalkeeping duties feature Stanley Nwabali (Chippa United), Francis Uzoho (Omonia FC, Cyprus), and Amas Obasogie (Singida Blackstars, Tanzania).
This combination ensures a mix of experience and youthful reflexes, allowing Chelle to rotate confidently while maintaining stability between the posts.
Chelle’s defensive strategy is designed to integrate seamlessly with the midfield. Anchored by Wilfred Ndidi (Besiktas FC) and Frank Onyeka (Brentford FC), the midfield can shield the backline, while creative options such as Raphael Onyedika (Club Brugge), Tochukwu Nnadi (Zulte Waregem), and Alex Iwobi (Fulham FC) provide fluid transitions from defence to attack.
Nigeria’s attacking contingent, led by Victor Osimhen (Galatasaray) and Ademola Lookman (Atalanta BC), relies on the defence’s ability to maintain shape and stability, allowing the forwards to exploit spaces on the counter.
The Super Eagles begin preparations with a friendly against Egypt at Cairo Stadium on December 16, before heading to Fès for their Group C campaign.
Nigeria opens against Tanzania on December 23, followed by matches against Tunisia on December 27 and Uganda on December 30.
With a well-rounded defensive lineup, Chelle aims to build a resilient team capable of challenging for the AFCON title.
