Rangers' Nigerian defender Emmanuel Fernandez has opened up about his journey through setbacks, and the mindset that now helps him handle criticism with maturity and calm.
The jury remains out on Fernandez following his £3 million move from Peterborough United during the summer transfer window.
Some Rangers supporters have questioned the club's significant transfer fee for him, particularly given his limited top-flight experience prior to arriving at Ibrox.
His early months in Glasgow were challenging as playing time was scarce, and injuries further curtailed his opportunities to establish himself within the squad.
With John Souttar and Derek Cornelius sidelined through injury, Fernandez has been handed a fresh opportunity to impress under new manager Danny Röhl.
The young centre-back has made four appearances under the German tactician, and recently scored his first Premiership goal.
Speaking about whether his past experiences have made it easier to deal with outside noise, Fernandez told reporters on Tuesday: "Yes, 100 per cent. Because I feel like I have been set back so many times in my career. I don't think anything can set me back again.
“I feel like I’ll just keep going, keep fighting, and keep showing the world what I can do.”
Reflecting on where he finds support during difficult moments, Fernandez explained that while he values the people around him, much of his strength comes from within.
“Sometimes, I would say I turn to my family, but a lot of the time growing up, I was a little bit individual.
"My mum was there, but she wasn’t always there. She was busy doing whatever she was doing. As a single mum, it has always been difficult.
“So, sometimes I had to look after myself growing up, and I grew up very young as a person. I feel like I can turn to other people, but within myself I have belief. I focus on myself and see what I can do.”
Emmanuel Fernandez has been named in Rangers' starting lineup for Wednesday evening's league match against Dundee United.
