'Nothing to write home about' - Osimhen fumes over officiating after Nigeria's painful loss to Morocco

Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has reacted to Nigeria’s heartbreaking defeat to host nation Morocco in the semifinals of the Africa Cup of Nations, expressing disappointment over the outcome, the officiating, and the mood within the team’s camp.

Nigeria, on Wednesday night in Rabat, lost 4–2 on penalties, following a goalless draw at the end of regulation time and extra time.

Speaking to journalists after the match, the Galatasaray forward admitted the loss was painful for the players, noting that missed opportunities at major tournaments are difficult to accept.

"I think me and my teammates we are all professionals but it is disappointing and it's hurting," Osimhen said to Canal+.

"Then we have to wait more years to try to qualify again for the AFCON and try to prove a point."

Osimhen also voiced strong dissatisfaction with the officiating, singling out Ghanaian referee Daniel Nii Ayi for criticism.

"To be honest with you, today's game was nothing to write home about in terms of officiating. It was that bad," he said.

Despite his frustration, the Nigerian striker congratulated Morocco for their victory and praised his teammates for their fighting spirit against a quality opponent, backed by a massive home crowd.

"A big congratulations to the Moroccans. I am proud of my team for the kind of fight we put up against a very good quality side. Also, playing in front of thousands of fans," he added.

Osimhen revealed that disappointment remains widespread in the Super Eagles camp, as the players felt they had what it took to go all the way.

"Moving forward there are more greater things ahead. To be honest with you, the whole squad is sad and disappointed because I believe we could have won the trophy."

He further described Morocco as one of the toughest teams Nigeria faced during the tournament.

"Yeah, one of the most {difficult} but when you play against this kind of quality team, you have to be alert at every time," Osimhen noted.

However, the 27-year-old praised the resilience shown by the Super Eagles, who matched the hosts throughout the contest before the lottery of penalties decided the outcome.

"For us to play them and get to penalties, it shows the kind of strength we have as a group and as an individual. But penalties is a game of luck and football as happened," he said.

Nigeria will now turn their attention to the third-place playoff, where they face Egypt on Saturday in a battle for the bronze medal.
