Oliseh responds to criticism, denies claims of bias after Super Eagles Afcon opener commentary

Former Super Eagles captain and ex-Borussia Dortmund midfielder Sunday Oliseh has dismissed allegations suggesting he did not support Nigeria during their 2-1 victory over Tanzania in the AFCON 2025 opener on Tuesday night at the Fez Stadium.

Oliseh, who worked as a match analyst and co-commentator for the encounter, had faced criticism from a section of fans who accused him of being overly critical of the team's performance rather than offering balanced analysis.

Responding in a post on X, the former Juventus midfielder expressed disappointment over what he described as unfair and unfounded attacks.

He reiterated his long-standing commitment to Nigerian football and stressed that his professional responsibility as an analyst requires objectivity, not blind loyalty.

"I am deeply saddened by the recent suggestions on social media that my analysis of the Super Eagles' performance against Tanzania stems from a lack of support for the team," Oliseh wrote.

"For nearly 40 years, I have dedicated my life and career to the progress of Nigerian football. While my professional duty requires impartiality and objective critique, my heart remains firmly with the players and Coach Eric Chelle. Constructive honesty is not a sign of dislike; it is a tool for improvement born out of a desire to see our nation succeed."

He added that recent contradictory accusations, from being "too supportive" to allegedly lacking support, show a misunderstanding of his role.

Oliseh urged fans to put aside distractions and rally behind the Super Eagles as the tournament progresses.

"Just recently, I was accused of being "too supportive" of the coaching staff. To now be accused of the opposite suggests a misunderstanding of my role as an analyst. My loyalty to the Green and White is unwavering and requires no defense. Let us move past these distractions and unite in our support for the players. God bless Nigeria," he said.

With the win over Tanzania, Nigeria sit second in Group C, trailing Tunisia on goal difference after the Carthage Eagles defeated Uganda 3-1.

The Super Eagles will face Tunisia next in a crucial fixture that could strengthen their chances of finishing top of the group and securing a favourable knockout-round path.
