'One of the best Super Eagles players' - Afcon 2019 top scorer reveals what he likes about Lookman

Former African Footballer of the Year Ademola Lookman is making a splash at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, registering seven goal involvements, more than any other player in the competition.

Alongside Morocco forward Brahim Díaz and Egypt’s Mohamed Salah, Lookman has found the net in every match he has featured in at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

The Atalanta dazzler has claimed two Player of the Match accolades, most recently following the Super Eagles' 4–0 rout of Mozambique's Mambas, a game in which he scored once and provided two assists.

Speaking as a pundit on SuperSport, 2019 Africa Cup of Nations top scorer Odion Ighalo highlighted that Lookman has been one of the standout performers for the Super Eagles since switching his international allegiance to the three-time African champions.

"He has been one of the best Super Eagles players for quite some time now and he’s showing it in the game," Ighalo stated.

Ighalo was particularly impressed by Lookman’s positional awareness, and also noted that the Charlton Athletic academy graduate is clinical in front of goal

"What I like about him is he knows how to position himself when the ball comes to his side.

"If he's not on the wing to cross the ball, he's always in the box and he's always close to the goal.

"When the chance comes, he always takes the chance, that’s one thing I like about him. He’s one of the best players in that team."

Despite his admiration for Lookman, Ighalo hailed Alex Iwobi, who produced a commanding display in Nigeria's emphatic victory over Mozambique, with three secondary assists to his name.

"Today I give it to Alex Iwobi because he engineered the midfield."

Lookman and his Super Eagles teammates will face Algeria's Desert Warriors in the quarterfinals of the  Africa Cup of Nations on Saturday, January 10 at the Marrakesh Stadium, Marrakesh.
