Rangers and Celtic icons have their say on penalty not given when Aribo fell to ground first half
Rangers missed the chance to move level on points with Celtic after the visitors came from behind to register a hard-fought 2-1 win in an Old Firm derby match at Ibrox Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
All three Nigeria internationals that started the recent 2022 World Cup playoff against Ghana - Joe Aribo, Leon Balogun and Calvin Bassey - went the distance for the Light Blues.
Aaron Ramsey's third minute opener was cancelled out by Tom Rogic's close-range strike in the seventh minute, before Cameron Carter-Vickers scored what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 43rd minute when he forced home after a free-kick.
One of the talking points of the game was in the 34th minute when Rangers were not awarded a penalty when Carl Starfelt inadvertently clipped the heels of the Aribo and the midfielder fell to the ground.
The referee was not interested despite appeals from the Nigerian and Rangers captain, James Tavernier.
Reacting to the incident, Rangers icon Ally McCoist and legendary Celtic goalkeeper Pat Bonner are of the opinion that it was an excellent decision by Willie Collum not to award Rangers a spot kick.
In quotes relayed by The Scotsman, Rangers all-time top scorer McCoist agreed with Sky Sports' Andy Walker that it was not deliberate, saying : "No, I agree, it's one of these innocuous collisions."
Bonner said on BBC Sportsound : "It’s never a penalty, he's almost caught him as he's run across him and tripped himself up".
Celtic have moved six points clear of their city rivals with seventy nine points accumulated from thirty two matches.
