Prolific Nigerian Striker Scores Again But Man City Bow Out Of Checkatrade Trophy
Published: November 30, 2017Manchester City's teenage Nigerian striker, Lukas Nmecha was on target for the U21s in a 2-2 draw with Chesterfield, a result which ultimately saw them bow out of the Checkatrade Trophy in the group stage after they were edged on penalties by The Spireites.
Joe Rowley had put the hosts ahead 16 minutes from time before Charlie Oliver was sent off for The Citizens.
Chesterfield capitalized on their one-man advantage thereafter as they threatened to pull out of sight.
Ed Francis grabbed the equaliser with two minutes remaining in normal time, curling a brilliant freekick home after Nmecha was fouled 25 yards from goal before the 18-year old continued the comeback in dramatic fashion, turning in Gonzalez's cross to make it 2-1 as City came inches away from qualification.
Chesterfield got the vital goal that sent the game into a shootout through O'Grady deep into injury time to complete the nervy ending.
While Nmecha was on for the entirety of the game, Nigerian midfielder Tom Dele-Basiru limped off in added time with an injury.
Nmecha, Francis and Taylor Richards all scored from the spot for City in the shootout.
