Manchester City-Bound Goalkeeper Bazunu Named Player Of The Month For July
Published: August 13, 2018Nigerian goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu has been named as SSE Airtricity/Soccer Writers' Association of Ireland Player of the Month for July 2018.
The 16-year-old Shamrock Rovers wonderkid saw off competition from Dundalk pair Chris Shields and Michael Duffy who were second and third respectively to win the prestigious award.
In June, Bazunu posted three shutouts before saving a penalty in Shamrock Rovers's goalless draw with champions Cork City on July 6.
''I am delighted to be awarded SSE Airtricity League Player of the Month for July by the Soccer Writers,'' Bazunu told the official website of Soccer Writers' Association of Ireland.
''There were lots of great players in contention, including my team-mate Dylan Watts, so to be voted number one is brilliant.
''I have been in with the first-team squad all season but had no idea that the opportunity to play would come along so soon for me.

''I have been working hard and with some injuries I was brought into the matchday squad, then head next the gaffer told me I was starting in the team against Bray in June.''
Bazunu was linked with Arsenal, Liverpool and Celtic before he agreed to join Manchester City and his transfer to the Premier League champions is expected to be completed in January 2019.
