Fit-Again Tammy Abraham Captains Chelsea U23 In Loss To Derby County
Published: August 24, 2018Chelsea suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Derby County in a Premier League 2 encounter held at Stamford Bridge on Friday evening.
Having recovered from injury, Nigerian striker Tammy Abraham took a step closer to returning to play for the first team when he started for the U23s; young Blues midfielder Tariq Uwakwe and Rams summer signing Aaron Eyoma entered into the fray in the 46th and 76th minute respectively.
Chelsea ought to have been in front before Derby County opened the scoring through Chris Martin in the 22nd minute, but Abraham saw his shot saved by goalkeeper Joshua Barnes.
The Blues's hopes of drawing the game took a blow when Charly Musonda received a second yellow card and was dismissed by referee Lloyd Woods in the 74th minute but they continued to push forward in search of an equalizer.
In the closing minutes, Abraham spurned a glorious chance to restore parity, his header narrowly missing the target after Uwakwe whipped in a corner kick from the right.
Joe Edwards' side was captained by Abraham and the striker was involved for the entirety of the game.
