Official: Highly-Rated Vitesse Nigerian Winger Gets Rivals From Chelsea
Published: September 01, 2018Belgium U21 international Charly Musonda will spend the remainder of the 2018-2019 season on loan at Dutch Eredivisie club Vitesse, Chelsea reported on their official website on transfer deadline day.
Musonda is capable of playing as an attacking midfielder as well as a right winger and will fight with promising Nigerian winger Hilary Gong, who can also be deployed as an attack-minded midfielder, for a spot in the Vitesse team.
Described as a very pacy winger, Gong joined Vitesse on a four-year deal from AS Trencin in July 2018 and became the third player of Nigerian descent to play for the Eredivisie side in recent seasons, following in the footsteps of Dominic Solanke and Abiola Dauda.
The 19-year-old Golden Boot Soccer Academy product featured in Vitesse's first three competitive games of the season against FC Viitorul and Basel in the qualifying rounds of the Europa League but has been absent from the match day squad in their last four matches due to injury.
The most famous Nigerian player to wear the jersey of Vitesse is ex-Super Eagles star Tijani Babangida, who represented the club during the 2001–2002 season on loan from Ajax Amsterdam.
Babangida is the highest scoring Nigerian in the history of the Dutch Eredivisie with 50 goals.
