Former England Striker Reveals Exactly Why Chelsea's Abraham Chose Three Lions Over Nigeria
Published: November 22, 2019
Former England international John Fashanu has claimed that Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham opted to represent his country of birth, England over Nigeria because of financial benefits.
The Wimbledon legend blamed Nigeria Football Federation president Amaju Pinnick for not explaining to Abraham the benefits in monetary terms he would have received if he had committed his international future to the three-time African champions.
The Chelsea number nine can no longer represent the Super Eagles after playing a cap-tying game for England against Czech Republic last month.
''Tammy knows why he hasn’t played for the Super Eagles and it’s because there is more financial benefits playing for England, there is more glory and less trouble,'' Fashanu was quoted as saying by Daily Trust.
''Why do we ask the boy to play for Nigeria and torture him? We need to step up. Tammy is a massive miss for Nigeria.
''Nobody went to London to talk to him and explain to him the benefits of playing for his motherland.''
Abraham's Chelsea teammates Ross Barkley and Fikayo Tomori, who have Nigerian blood flowing in their veins, are in contention to represent England at next year's European Championship.
