Europe's Top 50 Players : Wilfred Ndidi Vs Idrissa Gueye Debate Settled
Published: April 02, 2020The ongoing debate on who is the better defensive midfielder between Leicester City's Wilfred Ndidi and Paris Saint-Germain's Senegal international Idrissa Gueye has been settled by Whoscored.
The football statistics website ranked the Nigeria international (7.36) higher than the Senegalese (7.33) in their rating of Europe's top fifty players in the big five European Leagues, with the Foxes number 25 finishing in 39th position and the PSG ball winner coming 46th.
It will be recalled that Gueye was picked ahead of Ndidi when the Confederation of African Football unveiled the continent's best eleven in January.
The duo always battled for the top tackler in the English Premier League prior to Gueye's switch to PSG last summer.
"Wilfred Ndidi's importance to Leicester has been magnified by his absence since the turn of the year, with the Foxes disappointing during his time on the sidelines," the statistics gurus wrote on Ndidi.
"The Nigerian's 91 tackles is the second best return of all midfielders in Europe's top five leagues this season, while so too is 61 interceptions, with Ndidi proving the perfect shield to Leicester's defence.
"Brendan Rodgers' appointment at the King Power Stadium evidently had a positive effect on the 23-year-old, who is now widely considered one of the best in his position in football."
Last season, Ndidi also did better than Gueye, ending the campaign as the 79th top ranked player in Europe's top five leagues while the former Everton star did not make the top 100.
