The Reason Zirkzee Was Not In Bayern Munich's Squad Vs Chelsea In Champions League
Published: August 08, 2020
Allnigeriasoccer.com previously reported that Dutch-born striker of Nigerian descent, Joshua Zirkzee has been left out of Bayern Munich's squad for their ongoing UEFA Champions League round of 16, second leg clash against Chelsea at the Football Arena Munich, but that's only half the story.
Bayern Munich have officially confirmed that the Netherlands U19 international has not been selected by manager Hans-Dieter Flick due to physical problems.
Zirkzee was in contention to be named in the 23-man squad but missed out tonight after suffering a foot injury and it remains to be seen if he gets the green light from the medical team to play next week should the German champions make it to the quarterfinals.
The 19-year-old made his Champions League debut against Tottenham Hotspur in December 2019, coming off the bench to replace Ivan Perisic in the 86th minute and was a non-playing substitute against Chelsea in the round of 16, first leg about five months ago.
Of his 12 appearances for Bayern's first team to date, he was named in the starting lineup on three occasions.
A dream quarterfinal between Bayern Munich and Barcelona is on the cards with both teams leading their opponents 5-1 and 4-2 on aggregate respectively as things stand, more than ten minutes into the second half.
