Bayern's Zirkzee Shows Off His Nigerian Pidgin Language Skills After Netherlands U21 Debut
Published: October 11, 2020Joshua Zirkzee made his competitive debut for Netherlands U21 team as they thrashed Gibraltar 5-0 in a European U21 Championship qualifier on Thursday, October 8.
The Bayern Munich striker came off the bench just before the hour mark to replace Ajax Amsterdam's Ryan Gravenberch, his first appearance for his country of birth at that level.
The Nigerian Federation and manager Gernot Rohr are hoping to convince Zirkzee to switch his allegiance from the Netherlands to Germany but it won't be straightforward as the attacker is provisionally cap-tied to his country of birth and has expressed his desire to continue representing the European side.
The Royal Dutch Football Association are aware that Nigeria are on Zirkzee's case and named him in the final squad list for the U21 EURO qualifiers against Gibraltar and Cyprus this month.
Zirkzee took to Instagram on Saturday to show off his Nigerian pidgin language skills after a training session with the Dutch squad.
The 19-year-old wrote : "No be small thing omo🤞🏾😁 #Godson".
The post has been liked by 30,662 people as at the time of this report and it drew comments from other Nigeria-eligible starlets including Bayern Munich rising star Jamal Musiala and RB Leipzig striker Noah Ohio.
Born in the Netherlands, Zirkzee qualifies to represent Nigeria through his mother.
