Super Eagles Player Ratings : Okoye Not Ripe; Iwobi, Chukwueze Descent; Iheanacho Wasteful; Aribo Struggles
Published: November 17, 2020The Super Eagles were held to another draw by the Lone Stars of Sierra Leone in the reverse fixture of their double header clashes for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Izuchukwu Okosi provides the player ratings after the rather disappointing outcome.
The Starters
Goalkeeper
Maduka Okoye : The Sparta Rotterdam goalie was ponderous in his decisions in Freetown. Okoye again struggled with aerial balls against the west African giant killers. He is not ripe for the Super Eagles. 4/10.
Defenders
Kelvin Akpoguma : The German born Nigeria who is a natural centre back was once again deployed in the right back role on Tuesday. Had a slightly better game in the away fixture than his showing in Benin on Friday. 5/10.
Ola Aina : The ambidextrous defender who is also comfortable at right back was the preferred choice at left back on Tuesday. The Fulham defender asserted himself in the game and was better in his support of the attack from his position than Zaidu Sanusi did in the reverse match. 6/10.
Leon Balogun : The Rangers man was back in the frame after his injury in Benin on Friday. Helped shore up the Eagles defence. 6/10.
William Troost-Ekong : The other central defensive player had a slightly better game in Freetown and was on hand to clear a 90th minute shot from Alhassan Koroma which could have spelled defeat for the Eagles. 7/10.
Midfielders
Peter Etebo : Etebo continued to prove the glue that held the Eagles midfield with his steely performance but he was substituted in the first half with a groin injury. 5/10.
Joe Aribo : A subdued performance in the first half but an improved showing after the break. The Rangers man has struggled in previous matches played on African pitches and today was no different. 5/10.
Alex Iwobi : Iwobi was his usual bustling self. Always keen to give and receive the passes and even let fly a 69th minute shot that was close to target. 7/10.
Attackers
Ahmed Musa : The captain won some freekicks for the he team and was understandably angered by the decision of the referee to deny the Eagles a last gasp corner kick in the first half. Booked in the second half for remonstrating. 5/10.
Samuel Chukwueze : The Villarreal winger created some problems for the Sierra Leone's left back as he checked inside with deft touches but the closest he came to scoring was a first half attempt that flew to the empty stands. 7/10.
Kelechi Iheanacho : Started on Tuesday in the absence of injured Victor Osimhen. Was wasteful when presented with opportunities to score. Subbed off in place of Emmanuel Dennis in the second half. 6/10.
The Substitutes
Shehu Abdullahi : Came on for the injured Oghenekaro Etebo in the first half. Put in a good shift beyond the expectations of some cynics. 6/10
Chidozie Awaziem : The no-nonsense style of Chidozie Awaziem proved to be vital when he came on for Kelvin Akpoguma. Awaziem brought stability to the back line. 5/10.
Emmanuel Dennis : The striker replaced the ineffectual Iheanacho but had little time to effect any positive outcome. Will be nice to see more of him. 4/10.
Semi Ajayi : Lost his man towards the end of the game in a nervy moment but thankfully of resulted yo no goal for the hosts. 4/10.
