Nigeria-Eligible Winger Unlikely To Make Starting Debut For Manchester United Vs Real Sociedad
Published: February 23, 2021Nigeria-eligible winger Shola Shoretire is unlikely to make his starting debut for Manchester United in Thursday's Europa League round of 32 second-leg match against Real Sociedad at Old Trafford, manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has hinted.
The Red Devils have practically sealed qualification to the last sixteen after thrashing the La Liga side 4-0 at the Allianz Stadium last week.
Shoretire made his professional debut off the bench against his former club Newcastle United last weekend, replacing Marcus Rashford in the 89th minute, becoming the seventh youngest (17 years and 19 days) debutant in the history of the club.
Against Real Sociedad, Solskjaer could rotate with an eye on the Premier League game against Chelsea on February 28 but he's not planning to name the Anglo-Nigerian teenager in the starting XI.
"Shola and Amad, no. I'm not sure [starting] would be fair on them, they'll be in the squad," the Norwegian coach told reporters.
Shoretire would be the youngest player to feature for Manchester
United in European competition if he is involved against Real Sociedad, overtaking the
great Norman Whiteside.
He is used to breaking records, in 2018 he became the first 14-year-old to feature in the UEFA Youth League after playing the last 15 minutes in Manchester United's victory over Valencia.
