2022 WCQ : Rohr picks ex-Man Utd striker as 24th player vs Liberia; jersey numbers revealed
Published: November 13, 2021
Former Manchester United striker Odion Ighalo will not add to his international caps this evening when the Super Eagles face off with Liberia in a matchday five 2022 World Cup qualifier.
The Al-Shabab star finally bowed to the pressure mounted by Nigeria Football Federation supremo Amaju Pinnick and manager Gernot Rohr and reported for international duty in Morocco on Thursday afternoon.
The big news is that Ighalo has been omitted from the Super Eagles matchday 23 against the Lone Stars as a result of his late arrival to camp and missing the tactical session in the penultimate workout.
The 32-year-old had only one full training session with the national team on Friday, prior to this evening's game.
It is confirmed that Ighalo arrived the stadium with the rest of his teammates on Saturday afternoon but has been picked as the 24th player by Rohr, meaning he has no chance of featuring except one of the 23 players named in the matchday squad suffers an injury in the pre-match warm up.
As for the jersey numbers the players will be wearing, Victor Osimhen gets to keep his number 9 shirt, Iheanacho 14, Aribo 10, Ndidi 4, Collins 3, Troost-Ekong 5, Awaziem 20, Okoye 1, Balogun 6, Iwobi 18 and Moses Simon 15.
As for the twelve substitutes on the bench, goalkeepers Akpeyi and John Noble have been allocated the number 1 and 23 shirt respectively, Chukwueze 11, Onyeka 8, Abdullahi 12, Sanusi 13, Ejuke 17, Musa 7, Aina 2, Akpoguma 21, Omeruo 22 and Onuachu 19.
