'Another error' - Super Eagles fans react to Rohr's sacking and Eguavoen's appointment
Published: December 13, 2021Gernot Rohr was relieved of his duties as coach of the Super Eagles on Sunday, four weeks before the start of the 2021 African Cup of Nations, the Nigeria Football Federation have announced in a press release.
The Franco-German football tactician was coach of the Super Eagles since August 2016 and qualified the national team for the 2018 World Cup, 2019 AFCON and 2021 AFCON.
Rohr came under fire after some poor performances by the Super Eagles during the group stage of the 2022 World Cup qualifiers, losing 1-0 to Central African Republic and forcing Cape Verde to a draw in Lagos.
1994 Africa Cup of Nations-winning right-back Augustine Eguavoen has been appointed to replace Rohr on an interim basis.
Eguavoen will work with Salisu Yusuf (chief coach); Paul Aigbogun (assistant coach); Joseph Yobo (assistant coach); Dr Terry Eguaoje (assistant coach) and Aloysius Agu (goalkeeper trainer), while former Nigeria captains Augustine Jay-Jay Okocha and Nwankwo Kanu, and Garba Lawal have been appointed to provide technical and ambassadorial support for the crew.
Super Eagles fans have taken to social medial to react to the sacking of Rohr, with many of them questioning the NFF's decision to appoint Eguavoen as interim manager instead of Emmanuel Amuneke.
Take a look at how they reacted on Facebook :
Ogbonna Efoke : "I have never liked Rohr from day one, he doesn't have any pattern at all, but Eguavon replacing him is another error!"
Andrew El Achiever : "Isn't this move too prompt considering AFCON is just at the corner by January? The unity in the dressing room should, at least, be taken into consideration before any such move.
In as much as we may see this, I'm not quite comfortable with the idea of hiring a domestic tactician at the moment."
Chibuikem Eziokwubundu Nwabueze : "Good luck to Eguavon, but he should be mindful of the fact that, Nigerians are not appreciative, even if he sacrifice his wages or his sleep, or what ?Nigerians will still call for his head. Kudos to haters of Mr Rohr, they passed through the minister of sports to archive their wish."
Adakole Godwin-Agbo : "Welcome development but I feel Emmanuel Amuneke would've been more suitable for this position."
SitoAwasi Udofia : "Good move at any rate. It is high time we get over this mentality of "bring onyibo coach". We have indigenous coaches who can deliver. BTW, I want Nigeria to hire former under-17 coach, Emmanuel Amunike. I strongly believe he can deliver."
Adekunle Adebayo : "This Amaju pinnick has overstayed his tenure and needs to be sacked.Austin Eguavon's appointment is a total error, somebody who have managed the team and failed woefully. This must be a joke.misplacement of priority."
Nurudeen Olawale Oladipo : "Amuneke for me would have been a good stop-gap replacement, but Eguavon.... We're really back to the trenches and fans lamentations are back. These guys are poor in administration, they'll mess up everything at the end. I'm done with the Super Eagles!!!"
Anayo Cajetan : "AFCON in less than 3 weeks, Nigeria will be kick out in group stage. Shameless Nigeria we will not qaulify for world cup , this man managed super Eagles when will still have good squads but didn't give a good result and was sacked,he will still be fired with he Fails to make it to the world cup"
Rilwan Shehu Tirwun : "This is a very worst decision".
Kareem Yusuf Olawale : "Eguavon again??? After so many failure. Please who is the NFF president".
Oludaisi Folarin : "Wonders shall never end in 'Nigeria' When last did Eguavon coach a Team ?Is that the best consortium we can come up with? So many questions begging for answers ? I don't have issues with our own, after all Senegal has Cise while Algeria has belmadi or so and they both play exciting football.Honestly something is wrong somewhere".
Ochims Idachaba Louisiano : "It's okay sacking Mr nut, bringing in Eguaveon as interim is a welcome idea, I hope NF... remembers we have tested hands that could take up the job proper e.g Emmanuel Amunike..."
Chuka Chopxie Chima : "Emmanuel Amunike should be appointed ASAP if we don’t have a solid foreign coach available at this time".
Olayinka Fafolahan : "Why Not Emmauel Amunike".
Abramoney Adewale Adebayo Cfc : "Interim coach with how many assistance these people call NFF no get any sense at all."
