Lookman match-winner for Leicester against Liverpool; Ndidi hands Nigeria fitness boost
Published: December 28, 2021Super-sub Ademola Lookman was the match-winner for Leicester City as they claimed a hard-fought 1-0 win over Liverpool in a Premier League clash at the King Power Stadium on Tuesday night.
Wilfred Ndidi handed Nigeria a fitness boost ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations after returning to the starting lineup and he coped very well in central defence considering that he was hamstrung and placed on the bench in the Foxes' Boxing Day defeat to Manchester City.
The Leicester City number 25 was joined in the starting lineup by compatriot Kelechi Iheanacho.
It was goalless at halftime though Liverpool dominated much of it but Leicester City kept them at bay with the home team creating a few openings themselves.
Liverpool got the better chance to take the lead when Mohamed Salah's penalty was saved by Kasper Schmeichel after the Egyptian was fouled in the box by Ndidi in the 15th minute.
Iheanacho made way for Lookman in the 56th minute and it proved to be an inspired substitution, with the RB Leipzig loanee scoring what proved to be the winning goal three minutes later.
The 2017 U20 World Cup winner weaved his way into the penalty area and fired past goalkeeper Alisson Becker.
Following their seventh win of the season, Brendan Rodgers' team are back in the top ten while second-placed Liverpool are six points behind leaders Manchester City after the damaging defeat.
