WAFCON Cameroon 0 Nigeria 1 : Ajibade's goal sends Falcons to ninth successive World Cup
Published: July 14, 2022Rasheedat Ajibade's solitary goal Thursday evening was enough to guarantee a semifinals place for Nigeria in the ongoing Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco and a ninth successive FIFA Women's World Cup.
The nine-time African champions had never lost to the Indomitable Lionesses in the history of the WAFCON.
The Falcons' first goal scoring chance came in the 7th minute when Ngozi Okobi-Okeoghene'free kick was met by the beanpole striker Ifeoma Onumonu but her effort was off target.
Moments later, Rasheedat Ajibade was strong to hold off her marker but her resultant low cross into the box was cleared.
In the 23rd minute, Ashleigh Plumptre's header from an Ngozi Okobi-Okeoghene'free kick was feeble but it did cause a few tension. The Cameroonian defence however cleared the ball.
Onumonu twice came close to breaking the duck but the Lionesses defence were able to stand tall and thwart her effort.
The half ended with a Nigerian chance yet again. Francesca Ordega's shot came off a Cameroonian while the follow up shot by Halimat Ayinde went wide.
The Nigerians started the second half like a house on fire and it paid off on the 57th minute when Ajibade beat the offside trap to head home from an Ifeoma Onumonu's cross.
Nigeria will do battle with host nation Morocco in the semifinal of WAFCON 2022 on Monday, July 22 at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, Rabat.
