Nigerian defender breaks his silence on Southampton exit this summer
Published: July 19, 2022Nigerian central defender Oludare Olufunwa has broken his silence on his exit from Premier League club Southampton this summer.
The Academy product was released by the Saints upon the expiry of his contract on June 30, 2022.
Olufunwa has departed Southampton without making his professional debut or being called up to the senior squad for a competitive game.
However, the 20-year-old was often invited to train with the first team and participated in some pre-season friendlies.
He represented Southampton in the U18 Premier League, FA Youth Cup, Premier League 2, Premier League International Cup and EFL Trophy during his time at the St Mary's Stadium.
Olufunwa took to Twitter on Monday to send a message to the Southampton fans, thirty-eight days after his departure from the club was confirmed by the Premier League.
Thank you @SouthamptonFC for the past 11 years. I’ve worked with so many amazing staff members and players who’ve helped me grow as a player and person, and given me so many experiences I’ll never forget! Love to all the fans for giving me so much support on my journey too! ❤️ pic.twitter.com/DAEPHi5TtT

Olufunwa officially joined the Southampton Academy in 2010 after he was scouted while playing for a local club, and came through the ranks before making his debut for the U23 squad.
