Bassey breaks Nigerian record that stood for 25 years as Ajax confirm N9.8b capture of Rangers LB
Published: July 20, 2022Calvin Bassey has broken a Nigerian transfer record that stood for twenty-five years following Ajax Amsterdam's confirmation of his transfer to the club on Wednesday afternoon.
Through their official website, Ajax Amsterdam revealed that thy have reached an agreement with Glasgow Rangers for an initial fee of 23 million euros (N9.8 billion in Nigerian currency) and the total transfer fees could rise to 26.5 million euros if performance-related variables are included.
Predominantly a left-back, Bassey has now become the most expensive Nigerian defender in history, overtaking the legendary Super Eagles central defender Taribo West who moved to Inter Milan from Auxerre in 1997 in exchange for 12 million euros.
Rangers have also confirmed that the deal taking Bassey to the Amsterdam club is the largest in the club's history.
The Leicester City Academy product has put pen to paper on a five-year deal with Ajax Amsterdam, until June 30, 2027 and wore the number 33 at the back of his jersey during his unveiling ceremony.

Bassey has already linked up with his new teammates at their training camp in Austria ahead of Saturday's friendly against Eintracht Frankfurt - the last non-Scottish club he faced in a competitive game.
The Super Eagle departs Rangers after two years and with 65 games as a professional under his belt for the Light Blues.
