'Not a good idea' - Respected Belgian pundit urges Genk to sell one of their Nigeria internationals
Published: July 24, 2022Respected Belgian pundit Peter Vandenbempt has urged Racing Genk to sell one of their Nigeria international strikers before the transfer window closes for business.
Cyriel Dessers is competing with Paul Onuachu for a starting spot in attack and Vandenbempt has underlined that it's not a good idea to have one of them on the bench.
Dessers used to play second fiddle to Onuachu but his status has changed after a hugely successful loan spell at Feyenoord, where he mustered 20 goals in 41 all-competition appearances and was the Europa Conference League top scorer for 2021-2022.
The Belgian-born Super Eagles centre-forward has picked up where he left off last season with a goal for Genk in a 3-2 defeat to Club Brugge on the opening day of the season.
Onuachu has been linked with a departure from the Blue-White since last summer but nothing has come out of it.
"I don't think it's a good idea to have Paul Onuachu and Cyriel Dessers together," Vandenbempt told Sporza.
"Basically you don't set them both up and you don't want to put either one on the bench."
He added : "Cyriel Dessers was there two years ago, but now has a different status. And despite Onuachu's lesser season, he still scored his goals. It would be good if someone else leaves."
Onuachu and Dessers have two more years left on their contracts with the four-time Belgian First Division champions.
