No season debut for Nigeria-eligible winger as Man Utd announce squad v Liverpool
Published: August 22, 2022Shola Shoretire will not make his season debut for Manchester United when they take on Liverpool in an eagerly-anticipated Premier League meeting at Old Trafford on Monday evening.
Dutch football tactician Erik ten Hag has announced his third matchday squad as Manchester United coach and has left out the England U19 international of Nigerian descent.
Shoretire's chances of inclusion in the matchday 20 were thought to have improved as a result of his omission from the development squad's trip to Everton on Friday, August 19.
The likes of Christian Eriksen, Anthony Elanga, Jadon Sancho, Anthony Martial, Cristiano Ronaldo and Marcus Rashford are ahead of Shoretire in the pecking order of attack-minded players.
Shoretire initially trained with the first team at the start of pre-season preparations and then joined the development squad after he was omitted from the Tour 2022 squad.
The 18-year-old winger has been listed as a first teamer on Manchester United's official website and allocated the number 47 shirt for the 2022-2023 campaign.
Ten Hag gave the Anglo-Nigerian minutes in the final pre-season friendly against Rayo Vallecano, bringing him on in the 73rd minute to replace Alejandro Garnacho.
Manchester United starting XI : De Gea, Dalot, Varane, Martinez, Malacia, McTominay, Eriksen, Sancho, Fernandes (c), Elanga, Rashford.
Substitutes: Heaton, Maguire, Shaw, Wan-Bissaka, Fred, Van de Beek, Garnacho, Martial, Ronaldo.
