Super Eagles duo subbed in as Leicester City beaten by 10-man Chelsea
Published: August 27, 2022Nigerian internationals Kelechi Iheanacho and Wilfred Ndidi came off the bench in the second half as Leicester City were beaten 2-1 by Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday afternoon.
England youth teamer Carney Chukwuemeka was on U21 duties with Chelsea's development squad in the Premier League 2 on Friday evening, so missed out entirely.
Chelsea were reduced to ten men in the first half as combative midfielder Conor Gallagher was shown a red card for a second bookable offence.
After a goalless first half, England star Raheem Sterling broke the deadlock with a deflected effort two minutes into the second half.
Brendan Rodgers' response was to introduce Kelechi Iheanacho off the bench in the 55th minute but things went from bad to worse as Sterling netted his second goal in Chelsea colours in the 63rd minute.
Harvey Barnes fired past Mendy at the near post to half the deficit in the 66th minute and there was still lots of time left for the Foxes to get an equaliser but Chelsea defended well and were able to hold on to all three points.
In the 69th minute, Iheanacho found space for a shot on the edge of the box but his effort went wide and another of his attempt was off target five minutes later after he was picked out by Tielemans.
Ndidi, a shock omission from the starting lineup, came on with two minutes remaining for his thirteenth career appearance against Chelsea.
