Man Utd's youngest ever player in European match added to UEL squad pre-Real Sociedad
Published: September 08, 2022England U19 international of Nigerian descent Shola Shoretire has been added to Manchester United's Europa League roster ahead of Thursday's clash against Umar Sadiq's Real Sociedad at Old Trafford.
Manchester United previously named a 25-man squad list for the Europa League but stressed that the list was not exhaustive as those on the 'B' list can still be added on a match-by-match basis.
According to the updated squad list published by UEFA, Shoretire has been registered on Manchester United's B List for the Europa League ahead of the visit of Real Sociedad.
When Shoretire replaced Mason Greenwood in the 76th minute of a Europa League clash against Real Sociedad on February 25, 2021, he set a new record as the club's youngest ever player in a European match, at the age of 17 years and 23 days.
UEFA rules state that club-trained players born after 1 January 2001 do not have to be counted as part of the main group.
Europe's football governing body defines club-trained players as 'those who have been eligible to play for the club concerned for any uninterrupted period of two years since his 15th birthday by the time he is registered with UEFA – or for a total of three consecutive years with a maximum of one loan period to a club from the same association for a period not longer than one year'.
Players aged 16 may be submitted if they have been registered with the club for the previous two years without interruption.
The 18-year-old Shoretire has played nonstop at Manchester United since the age of nine, making him eligible to be registered on the B List.
