EFL Trophy : Red-hot Man Utd winger Shoretire scores another stoppage time equaliser
Published: October 19, 2022Manchester United wonderkid Shola Shoretire continued his rich vein of form by getting on the scoresheet as the Red Devils were beaten on penalties by the first team of League One outfit Fleetwood Town in a Papa Johns Trophy match staged at Highbury Stadium in Lancashire on Tuesday night.
Shoretire's masterclass saw Manchester United come back from two goals down to earn a point against Chelsea in their last Premier League 2 fixture last Saturday, with the England U19 international of Nigerian descent netting a brace in stoppage time.
After firing blanks in his first three games of the season, the 18-year-old is back to his best, scoring or assisting in each of his last four matches for Manchester United's development squad.
Charlie McNeill converted a penalty in the 21st minute to give the visitors the lead but Fleetwood Town were close to winning it as two quickfire second half goals from Carlos Mendes Gomes and Joe Garner put them 2-1 up.
In the second minute of stoppage time, Shoretire fired into the bottom corner to send the game to a penalty shootout.
Fleetwood Town took an extra point following a 5-4 win in the subsequent shootout. Shoretire's penalty was saved by Jakub Stolarczyk.
Maximillian Oyedele, who trained with United's first team on October 5 before their Europa League meeting with Omonia Nicosia, played the last three minutes against Fleetwood Town.
