Flying Eagles squad announcement : Abdullahi, Sarki headline 21-man roster for AFCON
Published: February 10, 2023The Nigeria Football Federation have announced the Flying Eagles final squad for the upcoming 2023 Africa U20 Cup of Nations.
Allnigeriasoccer.com exclusively reported on Thursday that manager Ladan Bosso selected 25 players in his provisional squad list for the tournament in Egypt.
Twenty one of those players are in contention to feature at the Africa Cup of Nations having made the final squad confirmed by the Nigeria Football Federation on Friday.
The roster is headlined by KAA Gent wonderkid Ahmed Abdullahi and Haliru Sarki, who was the standout player for the Flying Eagles in their 4-2 win over Zambia last week.
An analysis of the roster revealed that three goalkeepers, five defenders, six midfielders and seven strikers are in the squad.
The Flying Eagles are currently in Casablanca, Morocco, where they are holding a one-week training camp before the start of the tournament a week on Saturday.
Nigeria's first match of the campaign, as they attempt an eighth continental title, will be against Senegal's Cub Lions at the Cairo International Stadium starting from 9pm Egypt time on Sunday, 19th February.
The Flying Eagles, two-time FIFA World Cup runners-up and one-time bronze medalists, will then face hosts Egypt on Wednesday, 22nd February (same time and same venue) and Mozambique on Saturday, 25th February (same time and same venue).
All four semi-finalists at the 12-team championship in Egypt will qualify to fly Africa's flag at the FIFA U20 World Cup finals to be staged in Indonesia 20th May – 11th June this year.
