'I would choose Bassey' - Ajax insider insists Super Eagles star is best replacement for Alvarez
Published: April 21, 2023
Ajax Amsterdam insider and Votebal International journalist, Freek Jansen reckons that Calvin Bassey would be the best replacement for Edson Álvarez ahead of Ajax's Eredivisie showdown with PSV Eindhoven on Sunday.
Johnny Heitinga, manager of Ajax, won't be able to count on the services of Álvarez for the upcoming game at the Philips Stadion as the North American is suspended after receiving his tenth yellow card of the season against FC Emmen last weekend.
Bassey is not a guaranteed starter at Ajax these days following the dismissal of Alfred Schreuder.
The Nigeria international has started just three games from a possible eleven in the Eredivisie since Heitinga took over the managerial reigns and has been a non-playing substitute in the last three games.
Jansen has backed Bassey to fill the void that would be created by the absence of Mexico central defender Álvarez .
"I would choose Calvin Bassey in that position," Jansen said on Pak Scale Podcast, via Ajax Fanatics.
"He is the best replacement for Álvarez in the center of the back. I think he is the player who is the strongest in the head.
"Only then, of course, it all has to come from Jurriën Timber."
Bassey has not started a league game for Ajax Amsterdam since they were defeated 3-2 by Feyenoord on March 19.
