Arsenal loanee Balogun equals Ligue 1 record set in 1936 after goal against Lens
Published: May 12, 2023
Folarin Balogun netted his 19th league goal for Reims in their 2-1 loss to Lens on matchday 35 of the Ligue 1.
Balogun got his goal in the 23rd minute from the penalty spot after Marshall Munetsi was brought down by Kevin Danso which earned the latter a red card.
Lens would also restore parity from the penalty spot in the 40th minute through Przemyslaw Frankowski
Seko Fofana scored the winning goal for the home side in the 55th minute from Deiver Machado's brilliant pass.
Before his goal tonight, Balogun had failed to score in his last four outings in the Ligue 1 with his last goal coming against Brest where he equaled Glen Hoddle's tally of 18 goals in a single season.
The Arsenal loanee will still have to score at least one more goal to become the outright highest-scoring English player in a season in the Ligue 1 with Frederick Kennedy also netting 19 league goals in the 1935/1936 season when the league was played in a 16-team format.
In all competitions this season, Balogun has scored 20 goals and has registered three assists in 36 games for Reims.
The loss leaves Reims in 10th position in the standings while the win strengthens Lens's position as the second-placed team in the league.
