Confirmed: Werder Bremen sign talented young centre-back Ihendu
Published: June 18, 2023Through their official website, Werder Bremen have announced the signing of promising central defender of Nigerian descent Kelechi Daniel Ihendu.
The length and financial details of the contract have not been disclosed by the German Bundesliga side.
With his permanent transfer to Werder Bremen, Ihendu has ended his five-year association with RB Leipzig.
The 17-year-old represented the Red Bull team in the UEFA Youth League last season, making appearances against Celtic, Real Madrid and Shakhtar Donetsk.
He played in thirteen games in the A-Junioren Bundesliga North/Northeast, scoring one goal, and was also in action in the DFB-Pokal der Junioren against Nürnberg U19.
Werder Bremen revealed that Ihendu will begin training with the U23s but will also work with the first team on a regular basis as from July 5th.
In his first words as a player of Werder Bremen, Ihendu told the club's official website: "I’m looking forward to my time in Bremen and I’m certain that this is the right step for my development".
Clemens Fritz, Werder Bremen's head of professional football, describes Ihendu as a talented young centre-back who has got a really good physique and strong in the air.
