Official: Flying Eagles-eligible CB joins Southampton after release by Arsenal
Published: August 08, 2023
With a statement on their official website, Championship club Southampton have announced the signing of highly-rated Flying Eagles-eligible central defender Zach Awe.
The talented 2004-born player has joined the Saints on a three-year contract, until June 30, 2026, after spending eleven years at the Arsenal academy.
Southampton confirmed that they saw off competition from several clubs to land the signature of the Hale End Academy product.
Arsenal offered Awe fresh terms to extend his stay at the Emirates Stadium, but he decided to embark on a new chapter in his career in search of first team football.
Having said that, the St Mary's outfit have informed that the centre-back will begin his career at the Saints with the U21 squad.
He made 31 appearances in the Premier League 2 during his time at Arsenal, and was on target on two occasions.
Although Awe trained with Arsenal first team several times, he did not get to make his professional debut before departing the north London club after his contract expired on June 30, 2023.
Awe is the second player of Nigerian descent signed by Southampton this summer, following in the footsteps of Chelsea-reared fullback Derrick Abu.
