Uduokhai: Augsburg CB heavily courted by ex-Super Eagles coach Rohr named in Bundesliga TOTW
Published: October 23, 2023
Felix Uduokhai has been recognized for his outstanding performance during Augsburg's 5-2 win over 1.FC Heidenheim 1846 on Sunday, October 22, with football statistics website Whoscored including the central defender in its Bundesliga Team of the Week for matchday 8.
A former Germany U21 international who is provisionally cap-tied to his country of birth, the Annaberg-Buchholz native was among the dual national players with German background heavily courted by Gernot Rohr during his time as Super Eagles coach.
Rohr attempted to convince Uduokhai to switch his allegiance from Germany to Nigeria but the former Bayern Munich defender was unsuccessful before he was shown the exit door by the Nigeria Football Federation.
Uduokhai impressed as Augsburg fought back from two goals down to register a 5-2 win over FC Heidenheim - the first time the Fuggerstädter have scored five goals in an away game in the Bundesliga.
Augsburg extended their lead in the 65th minute when the ball bounced up off Uduokhai and over the line after a good delivery from Fredrik Jensen.
It was Uduokhai's first goal in the Bundesliga since September 26, 2020 when he netted against Borussia Dortmund and also his first Bundesliga goal away from home.
The 26-year-old won three aerial duels against Heidenheim, made four clearances and three interceptions, won one foul and was accurate in 90.2 percent of his passes.
