Aston Villa target January move for striker named in Nigeria's provisional AFCON squad
Published: December 20, 2023Aston Villa have reportedly identified Leicester City striker Kelechi Iheanacho as a potential target for the January transfer window.
According to Football Insider, Aston Villa have set their sights on RB Leipzig's Timo Werner and Kelechi Iheanacho ahead of the reopening of the transfer window.
Unai Emery is in the market for at least one forward to share the goalscoring burden with Ollie Watkins, who has mustered 40 goal involvements (28 goals, 12 assists) since the Spaniard was appointed coach.
Aston Villa believe signing either the former Chelsea man or the Manchester City academy product would be a valuable addition to the squad.
Iheanacho's future at Leicester City has been the subject of speculation since the start of this season, with his contract set to run out on June 30, 2024.
The 27-year-old has plenty of Premier League experience, having racked up 196 appearances combined for Leicester and Manchester City, registering 42 goals and 28 assists.
He has also scored in the UEFA Champions League, Europa League and Conference League.
Iheanacho has not played much for Leicester City since the start of December due to illness but was fit enough to be included in the matchday squad for the trip to Birmingham City on Monday.
The 2013 Fifa U17 World Cup Golden Ball winner is one of the thirteen strikers named in Nigeria's provisional squad for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
